The Most Expensive Music Instrument Sold at Auction

Did you know that the most expensive musical instrument sold at auction is the VIOLINO STRADIVARIUS ‘LADY BLUNT’ sold for £ 9,808,000 (U$ 15,875,800) by Tarisio Auctions (USA) in LONDON, UK on June 20, 2011? The auction was organized online on behalf of the Nippon Music Foundation and profits went to the earthquake in northeast Japan and to the Tsunami Relief Fund. The authenticity of the violin was certified by W.E. Hill & Sons.

Lady Blunt is a Stradivarius violin made in 1721 by the renowned Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari. Lady Anne Blunt was one of the first violin owners. This is one of the two best preserved Stradivarius violins to this day. It survived in almost original condition since, most of the time, it has belonged to collectors and has been little played.

Do you think such an instrument should be used, perhaps performed by today’s greatest violinists, even knowing the risk of depreciation? Or do you think it should be kept in the hands of collectors, as a museum piece, without being used?
