[If you don’t have the patience to read the texts, go straight to the playlist here]

1. Overcomer – Mandisa

I really like this hit song from 2013. In this MV, Mandisa made a point by portraying true stories of people who have won their battles. So let’s start the list with this beautiful message of encouragement.

Excerpt:

“Everybody’s been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Ooh, You’re not alone
Just take a breath, don’t forget
Hang on to his promises
He wants you to know
You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it’s hopeless
That’s when he reminds you
That you’re an overcomer
You’re an overcomer”

2. Happy Day – Tim Hughes

Tim sings about the main reason that brings joy to every Christian. I felt privileged to play the piano to this song with a British worship team in a morning service at a beautiful church in the countryside of England, it felt like a dream – that was definitely a happy day, a very happy day! ;)

Excerpt:

“The greatest day in history
Death is beaten, You have rescued me
Sing it out, Jesus is alive
The empty cross, the empty grave
Life eternal, You have won the day
Shout it out, Jesus is alive
He’s alive
Oh, happy day, happy day
You washed my sin away
Oh, happy day, happy day
I’ll never be the same
Forever I am changed”

3. O Tempo (Time) – Oficina G3

Oficina G3 is a Brazilian rock band that had an impact in the life of teens, mainly in the 90’s (well, actually, in the life of teens whose parents were more “liberal”). This song was recorded in 2000 and marked the last year of the twentieth century, a period in which the band focused on pop rock and left hard rock for a bit. In that ‘time’, PG and Juninho Afram were two of the members.

Excerpt:

“My dreams the wind can not carry
The hope I found in Your gaze
My dreams the sand will not bury
Because of the life I received when I met You
In Your arms no matter the time
There is only the moment to dream
And the fear that is always at the door

When I’m with You
He can not enter
Time goes by
But something I’ll always keep
Your love, that one day I found

4. Blessed Be Your Name – Newsboys

This song was written by English composer Matt Redman and has been covered by many musicians. I remember driving on the “wrong side” of the road, trawling British lands to the sound of Matt’s CD and singing this song out loud.

Excerpt:

“And blessed be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name”

The chosen performance is that of the Newsboys band, in Houston, Texas, which at the time was led by the Australian-charming-hairless-vocalist-who-wore-eyeliner Peter Furler.

5. Vencedor (Winner) – Jotta A

… and representing the slope of “triumphalist songs” Jotta A, our boy who grew up and captivated the world. I remember when I was in Dallas, having lunch at the home of Texan friends, when one of them asked me if I knew Jotta A. As I had been away from Brazil for years, I didn’t know what was going on in the Christian music scenery of my homeland, so I answered that I didn’t know. He said that after lunch he would show me the video of this boy on a TV talent show. He said he couldn’t understand how I didn’t know about him, since so many people were talking about in the USA and sharing videos of him. :) At that time, I decided not to have TV and stay out of social media because I was on “strike”, so I didn’t know about any “viral videos”. When he (who is a musician) showed me Jotta A at Raul Gil’s TV show, and while we watched the video together he had teared eyes, and so did I. How proud I felt! So young and talented. But here is a song from when he was more grown up and had passed through his changing voice (adolescence).

Good lyrics to encourage people who struggle from bullying.

Excerpt:

“I do not want to, I do not want to fight anymore
For people to accept me
To accept the way I am, the way I am
But even if you discredit me, I’ll follow through to the en
What bad can you do? I was born to win”

6. The Happy Song – Jamie Grace

That kind of “feel-good-song” … Perfect to listen while you make the bed and get organized to start the day.

Excerpt:

“And everything will be okay
‘Cause all my blues are gone away
So I just gotta sing

The happy so-o-o-o-ong
Singing all day lo-o-o-o-ong
And when the sun is go-o-o-o-one
I’m still happy ‘til the brand new dawn
My so-o-o-o-ong
Singing all day lo-o-o-o-ong
And maybe I will see the rain
But happiness is here today
So won’t you help me sing?
The happy song”

[I could not help myself and made a not-too-short list. But it’s okay]

7. Light Up The Sky – The Afters

“When I’m feeling all alone
With so far to go
The signs are no where on this road
Guiding me home
When the night is closing in
Is falling on my skin
Oh God will You come close?

Light light light up the sky
You light up the sky to show me You are with me
I can’t deny
No I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes
So I can see You all around me
Light light light up the sky
You light up the sky to show me
That You are with me”

8. Deus no Controle – Eyshila

Eyshila, a singer from Ceará, Brazil, who has lived in Rio for a long time now, used to sing with Altos Louvores and Voices – both bands which were successful in the Christian music in the 1990’s and 2000’s, respectively.

Excerpt:

“In control, God is, God is
In control, God is, God is
I don’t have to worry about what’s coming
I just have to trust and rest
Because God is in control
I learned that I don’t need to live worried
About what will happen
With what will come
Today will pass, in this life everything changes
There is only one God, there is only one God”

9. Old Church Choir – Zach Williams

This song was released on 2017 and viralized after this video of this cute girl singing in church with the children’s choir.
… that kind of music that really cheers you up, and make you want to dance.

Excerpt:
“There’s revival, and it’s spreading

Like a wildfire in my heart

Sunday morning, Hallelujah

And it’s lasting all week long
Can you hear it?
Can you feel it?
It’s the rhythm of a gospel song
Oh, once you choose it, you can lose it
There ain’t nothing, there ain’t nothing gonna steal my joy

I got an Old Church Choir singing in my soul
I got a sweet salvation and it’s beautiful
I’ve got a heart overflowing ‘cause I’ve been restored
There ain’t nothing gonna steal my joy
No, there ain’t nothing gonna steal my joy”

10. As for Me and My House – John Waller

I admire Waller’s art and personal life as well. Besides writing worship songs, he also writes songs for Christian movies in the US. John and his wife already had 6 children of their own when they decided to adopt 3 siblings from Ukraine. Now there are 11 people sitting at the table. This song touches me and is one of my favorites about FAMILY.

Excerpt:

“I’m done
Building my own kingdom
No more
Seeking worthless idols

Like sheep we have all gone astray
We must choose this day
Whom we will serve
As for me and my house
We will serve the Lord
We will serve the Lord
Idols raised, tear them down
Cause we will serve the Lord
We will serve the Lord
To one king we bow down
As for me and my house
We will only serve the Lord

11. Bloom – Moriah Peters

These words have already helped me a lot and I hope they make you smile and lift you up with confidence, believing that a new time is about to come and that things will get better, because this whole process is only part of your blossoming. You’re blooming!

Excerpt:

“Have you ever heard you are beautiful
I know what you’re worth
But you don’t see it at all
After the rain has fallen down the sun comes out

Just keep believing
You’ll see a new season soon
You’re turning into something amazing
Baby, you were born to bloom, bloom, bloom, bloom”

[sighs] Heavenly beautiful lyrics!

12. De Tal Maneira – Eyshila

One more by sweet Eyshila.

Excerpt:

It’s so incomparable
His love has no limits
You accepted me as I am
I was lost, He found me
He loved me, He loved me
And forgave my sins
Deleted all my past
He loved me, He loved me”

13. Moving Forward – Israel Houghton

If your 2017 wasn’t that good, then this song is for you. I remember when I first heard it on the radio while driving to the gym years ago, and the lyrics penetrated my heart. I wrote down the name of this song on my phone Notes, so I could listen repeatedly over the Internet. These words calmed my soul. It may help you too.

Excerpt:

I’m not going back, I’m moving ahead
Here to declare to You my past is over in You
All things are made new, surrendered my life to Christ
I’m moving, moving forward, oh

You have risen with all power in Your hands
You have given me a second chance
Hallelujah, hallelujah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, oh”

14. Gold – Britt Nicole

The video shows scenes similar to what many kids and teens spend in everyday life. We all have to know that we are worth more than gold. And look, the value of the gold is very high, huh! ;) Your value is immeasurable! :D

Excerpt:

“This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world
Whatever you’ve been told, you’re worth more than gold
So hold your head up high, it’s your time to shine
From the inside out it shows, you’re worth more than gold
You’re worth more than gold”

15. Do Something – Matthew West

To end this list well, here comes Matthew West – one of the best songwriters in the American Christian world.

My final message to you is: in the new year, what do you plan to do for your neighbor? There are so many social projects. Join some, or create a new project for your community yourself. There are many people in need of help. We all need something, just as we all have something wonderful to share: time, hugs, smiles, advice, lessons, financial resources, music. The list is endless. I hope this coming year provides you with tons of ideas to “do something”.

Excerpt:
“I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”
Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of
People living in poverty
Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me

So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?”
He said, “I did, I created you

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something”

It’s all your choice. Therefore, just try to make this year FABULOUS, your way!

BONUS:

This is that kind of movie you have to watch and spread the word to everyone. It just has some many lessons that can make us better people. “Wonder” (2017) is based on the book of R. J. Palacio. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Izabela Vidovic. It has a delightful soundtrack.

For me, it’s the most beautiful and touching 2017 movie.

Check out the previous, but if you’re already convinced after hearing so many people praising it on social media, don’t even watch the previous, because when we see the movie without knowing anything, it touches and surprises you even more. ;)

SHARE it with your friends and let’s spread joy, motivation and love….

… and remember to be thankful. For everything!
